Our story

A name with deep roots.

Two ideas live inside “Grove 387.” One is a grove of trees. The other is a year. Together they say almost everything about how we work.

The grove

Strong roots make strong trees.

A grove is more than a stand of trees. It’s a community of them — sharing soil, shelter, and light, each one stronger for the others nearby. The oldest groves endure because of what happens out of sight: deep, patient roots.

That is how we see a school. Lasting growth isn’t forced from the top; it’s cultivated from the roots — through trust, evidence, and good daily practice. Support the roots, and the canopy takes care of itself.

  • Supportive. Teachers and families thrive together, not alone.
  • Strong. Practice grounded in evidence, not fashion.
  • Enduring. Capability that stays once we’ve gone.
A teacher reads to a circle of children under a large oak tree.
An oak that has weathered a hundred storms gives the steadiest shade — strong roots, made to last.
The number

387 BC — the first Academy.

In or around 387 BC, the philosopher Plato established a school in a grove sacred to the hero Academus, just outside Athens. We know it as the Academy — arguably the Western world’s first enduring institution of higher learning.

What made it remarkable wasn’t a building. It was a method: dialogue, questioning, and the radical belief that good education shapes not just a person but a society. Twenty-four centuries later, that conviction still guides us.

Our techniques are thoroughly modern. Our purpose is ancient.

What we believe

Our principles

Evidence over fashion

We bring techniques with a track record — from cognitive science, formative assessment, and decades of classroom research — and we’re honest about what the evidence does and doesn’t say.

Teachers are professionals

Lasting change is built with teachers, not done to them. We coach, model, and trust the expertise already in the room.

Families are partners

Children learn in two places at once. When home and school speak the same language, learning compounds.

Small, sustainable steps

We’d rather embed one habit that lasts than launch ten initiatives that fade by spring.

Who we work with

Generalists for the whole grove.

Grove 387 partners with primary and secondary schools, school networks, and the families they serve — in person and online. Whether you’re a single classroom looking to grow or a leadership team planning a whole-school shift, there’s a starting point here for you.
